The Pew Latin American Fellows Program was established in 1990. Since then, Pew has helped advance the scientific careers of more than 250 past and present Pew fellows. Former Pew fellows can be found in leadership roles in research institutes throughout Latin America, where they are contributing to a vibrant and successful interdisciplinary scientific community. The 30th class of Pew Latin American fellows will be selected after a competitive review process in April 2020. Ten fellowship awardees will be chosen and a grant will be issued by The Pew Charitable Trusts to their sponsoring institutions in the United States by August 2020.
For the 2020 application process, applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree by February 1, 2020 but no earlier than July 10, 2015. Preference will be given to applicants who received their undergraduate and graduate degrees from institutions in Latin America. Applicants may have obtained their undergraduate or graduate degrees from a school outside of Latin America but preferably not in the United States. Applicants may not have started their postdoctoral training in the U.S. prior to January 1, 2019. Applicants will not be considered if they have completed graduate work with a proposed sponsor. Applicants are required to submit a written statement of intent to return to Latin America. To apply, candidates are not required to have a commitment of a research position and laboratory space after the fellowship. However, in order to obtain the $70,000 portion of the award at the end of the fellowship period for the purchase of supplies and equipment to establish a laboratory in Latin America, Pew fellows must obtain a written commitment of a position and laboratory space at least 4 months before the end date of the Pew grant.
After the application deadline is passed, submitted applications will be reviewed by the Regional Selection Committee. The regional committees will invite finalists in their region to interview in person with the committee members. Each committee will nominate six candidates to Pew. The nominated candidates will be further reviewed by the National Advisory Committee in the United States, which will then make the final selection of the 2020 fellows by April 2020. Salary support from Pew for chosen fellows will begin August 2020.
