The PhD program leading to the academic degree of Ph.D. in Biotechnology comes from a cooperative effort between academics from the Life Sciences Faculty from Andrés Bello University, as well as other academic units from the University that cultivate the knowledge in the interest of training in biotechnology, without neglecting the interdisciplinary aspects.

Specific Objectives

  • Prepare professionals in the areas of biology, innovation, intellectual property, and patents to develop careers in academia, government institutions, or the overall industry.
  • Provide multidisciplinary education that allows our graduate students to apply their knowledge in the use of biological systems and organisms and their subcellular components in producing industrial goods and services.


Graduate Profile

Graduates of the Ph.D. in the Biotechnology program at Andrés Bello University have the knowledge, skills and attitude corresponding to a high-level researcher, trained to carry out autonomous and systematic processes of original research in the area of Biotechnology, expanding the knowledge in their field of study.

During their training, students deepen and apply communication skills, critical analysis abilities and scientific reasoning, allowing them to formulate complex problems and propose innovative solutions to them, leading applied research groups in laboratories of public and/or private institutions.

This researcher possesses a high interdisciplinary domain regarding biological organisms and their subcellular components, industrial goods, services, and administration, contributing to their work to the scientific and productive sectors.

They possess specialized and advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in some of the research lines of aquaculture biotechnology, vegetable biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, biomedicine, and bioinformatics, emphasizing administration, intellectual property, and business.

They are professionals capable of leading, working and communicating effectively with teams of applied research, linked to innovation and business, using a wide range of skills related to incorporating biotechnological processes associated with biology.

At the end of the program, graduates are able to:

  • Use available evidence, critically analyzing information to identify niches that require biotechnological intervention.
  • Formulate complex biotechnological research problems from evaluation and integration of information from different scientific sources and needs of the professional context that contribute to the disciplinary area’s advancement.
  • Use their knowledge to establish companies and implement the design of biotechnological products.
  • Master the national and international regulatory aspects related to biotechnological products.
  • Conduct original research, formulate hypotheses, and develop methodic strategies to solve complex problems in their field of study.
  • Design and execute applied research projects in some of the areas of aquaculture biotechnology, vegetable biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, biomedicine and bioinformatics for the development of new knowledge.
  • Actively participate in interdisciplinary work teams oriented towards innovation in Biotechnology research.
  • Communicate effectively, in writing and verbally, the results derived from their research, following standards recognized by the discipline or field of study.
  • Behave responsibly and ethically in developing research and applying its results in the professional and academic areas.


Lines of Research

General description on the lines of research

Interdisciplinary study field that focuses on understanding basic cellular and molecular processes and their applications, establishing how these relate to relevant human pathologies, emphasizing neuroscience and cancer.

Study field that raises and solves biologic problems, integrating all the related fields with programming and data analysis in health topics, as well as nanotechnology and computational modeling of biological systems. This line emphasizes research initiatives on nanoparticle biosynthesis, microscopy, bioprocess engineering, systems biology and molecular modeling dynamics.

Study field oriented towards fundamental and applied research on physiology and vegetable cellular biology, functional genomics and plant-pathogen interaction. This line emphasizes topics associated with plant cell biology, fruit metabolomics, plant physiology, responses to biotic and abiotic stress and postharvest physiology.

Study field oriented towards fundamental and applied research on the biology of commercially important marine species. The main goal is to develop knowledge that increases aquaculture productivity in Chile, focusing research efforts on growth endocrinology, genomics, stress responses, physiology, developmental biology, and microbiology of fish pathogens.

Study field focused on fundamental and applied research on the functioning of biological systems such as bacteria, viruses and yeasts, to generate products of industrial value, highlighting the microbial synthesis of nanoparticles, proteins, biopolymers and probiotics, as well as system biotechnology for genetic manipulation guided by mathematical modeling and development of bioprocesses.
