PhD in

Biotechnology

The PhD in Biotechnology is aimed at offering advanced and updated multidisciplinary training in the field of biotechnology, integrating knowledge from various areas of biological sciences, technology transfer, bio-business and scientific communication, promoting scientific research and technological innovation in these areas. In this way, the program contributes to train researchers with the necessary skills to face the current and future challenges of the biotechnology sector, contributing to society and to the sustainable development of the country.

Welcome to

Biotechnology

Multidisciplinary training of excellence with the purpose of preparing scientists with the essential competencies to address the challenges of a globalized world and contribute to the advancement of research and innovation in the biotechnological field.

Specific Objectives

  • Provide spaces that enable the acquisition of advanced knowledge in Life Sciences, particularly in the areas of Biomedical and Animal Biotechnology; Microbial Biotechnology; and/or Plant Biotechnology, as well as in intellectual property and patenting, bioethics, and biobusiness.
  • Generate spaces that allow for the training of students in addressing biotechnological issues through scientific research and the development of biologically-based technologies, stemming from a multidisciplinary education.
  • Facilitate spaces to contribute to the production of cutting-edge knowledge and communicate it through articles or patent applications, while adhering to bioethics guidelines.

Graduate Profile

The graduate of the PhD in Biotechnology at the Universidad Andrés Bello possesses advanced knowledge and skills in Life Sciences and the generation of biologically-based technologies. These qualifications enable them to identify and address biotechnological issues and propose innovative solutions from a multidisciplinary perspective, with a strong sense of responsibility and bioethics.

The graduate possesses critical analysis and scientific reasoning skills, which allow for independent and original research, particularly in the fields of Biomedical and Animal Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, and/or Plant Biotechnology. Additionally, they have expertise in intellectual property and bio-business and are proficient in communicating the results of their research through both written and verbal means.

At the end of the program, graduates are able to:

  • Undertake autonomous and original research, from a multidisciplinary perspective, by formulating research questions and developing methodological strategies. This includes proposing innovative solutions to complex issues within the field of biotechnology (biologically-based technologies) while adhering to bioethical standards.
  • Generate new knowledge through the design and execution of research projects in one of the following areas: Biomedical and Animal Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, and/or Plant Biotechnology, all while considering aspects of intellectual property and bio-business.
  • Effectively communicate research findings in written and oral form, in accordance with recognized standards within the discipline or field of study.

Lines of Research

General description on the lines of research

A multidisciplinary field of study focused on advanced fundamental and applied research in the physiology, cellular biology, and molecular biology of human or animal pathologies, or with the aim of enhancing the productivity and health of commercially important animal species. This knowledge is intended to generate biologically-based technologies primarily to address biosanitary issues. It involves the development of products or methods based on human or animal biology, including the creation of innovative treatments for various diseases, new diagnostic systems, and the optimization of procedures and production processes.

A multidisciplinary field of study focused on advanced fundamental and applied research in the physiology, metabolism, genetics, and omics of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi, aimed at generating biologically-based technologies primarily to address biosanitary, agricultural, industrial, or environmental issues. This involves the development of products or methods based on microorganisms through the optimization of procedures, production processes, and/or genetic manipulation.

A multidisciplinary field of study focused on advanced fundamental and applied research in the physiology, metabolism, genetics, and omics of plant organisms or algae, with the aim of generating biologically-based technologies primarily to address agricultural, environmental, or marine issues. This involves the development of products or methods based on plant organisms or algae through the optimization of procedures, production processes, and/or genetic enhancement.
